Why do so many women advocate the idea of “being friends first,” yet fear that their male friends might develop feelings for them?
Jul 23, 2026
Outside of dating apps, they don’t like it when guys take the initiative to approach them or ask them out. They believe that girls won’t date “strangers,” and such behavior makes guys think of them as potential romantic partners, rather than just ordinary people. They want guys to get to know them first. At the same time, many articles describe how girls fear that a male acquaintance might start flirting with them, or even worse, confess their feelings. There’s no middle ground here: the definition of “a male friend who could ruin your friendship” is very broad—it could range from a close friend you’ve known for ten years to a complete stranger you’ve just met.
