The phrase “we need to talk” should legally require a preview
It could be anything. A breakup. A work issue. A family problem. A roommate complaint. A completely normal conversation about where someone left the charger. But your brain does not wait calmly. Your brain immediately opens 27 disaster tabs and starts building a full legal case against you. You start rereading old messages. Checking your tone. Remembering one awkward thing you said three weeks ago. Wondering if this is about something you forgot, something you did, or something you didn’t even know was happening. And the worst part is the sender is usually just walking around living normally. Meanwhile you are emotionally preparing for court. There should be categories. “We need to talk: not life-ruining.” “We need to talk: mildly uncomfortable.” “We need to talk: you are not in trouble.” “We need to talk: yes, panic a little.” 🫠 Communication would be so much more humane if people gave a tiny preview. Because the sentence itself is not the problem. The empty space after it is. That empty space becomes a horror movie your brain directs, produces, and stars in.🥹
