At first, he thought she was joking. Whenever he mentioned something he liked, she would make a face or say “ew.” But it kept happening. Slowly, he stopped bringing things up. He stopped recommending music. Stopped explaining jokes. Stopped letting her see the parts of him that felt easy and harmless before. Then one day, he realized he felt embarrassed about things he used to love. That scared him more than the comments themselves. When he finally told her, she seemed surprised. She explained that people from her past had made her associate those interests with something negative. But he told her that did not make it okay to punish him for it. For the first time, she listened. And for the first time in months, he felt like maybe he could be himself again.
