She did not hear it from him. She heard it from her best friend. The night before, they had all been drinking together when her fiancé jokingly said he could cheat on her and she would never notice. When she confronted him, he said it was just a drunk joke. He said her friend misunderstood. He said she was being insecure. But the sentence would not leave her mind. Suddenly, every late night, every hidden phone screen, every annoyed answer felt different. The worst part was not only what he said. It was who he said it to. Her best friend. Now she cannot tell if he was joking, or testing how close he could get to the truth.
