He thought donating his kidney to his wife was proof of love. They had been married for years, and when she needed a transplant, he did not hesitate. The surgery was painful. Recovery was hard. But he believed that was what marriage meant. One month later, she sat him down and said she needed to confess something. Years earlier, she had cheated on him. It was not recent. It was not ongoing. But the timing made it feel unbearable. He had just given her a part of his body, and now he was hearing that she had carried this secret through their marriage. She said guilt was eating her alive. He could not stop thinking about one question: why now? Why after the surgery? Why after he had already made the sacrifice? Why not before he agreed to save her life? He asked her to tell their family the truth, because he felt like he could not carry the humiliation alone. She said that was cruel.
